License Plate Visibility

Thursday, 16 April 2009 23:23 by admin

All states require that license plates be visible. The law requires a clear view of both the front and back license plates. So the question becomes how do RV travelers use a carrier hitch to carry bikes and other things while it would obscure the license plate? The truth is police officers are not going to bother RVers if you’re abiding the rules especially when usually the toad and/or the truck pulling a trailer are up to date. As a precaution it is still a lot easier to do something about it as soon as possible instead of waiting to get pulled over and ticketed. Keep in mind if the plate is not visible, they can tow (technically) your vehicle away. While this is generally not a real big problem, don’t give cops a reason to pull you over.

Lazy Pet Owners

Thursday, 16 April 2009 22:41 by admin

Did you know that more and more RV parks are offering a free night's stay to anyone turning in offenders? If caught some offenders are asked to leave the spot. The last thing we pet owners need to see on the signs in the RV park's office is no pets. Think about it. Don't let a few lazy pet owners ruin it for the rest of us. Animal lovers should be responsible with their pets. In every campground, you are almost guaranteed to find a lazy pet owner who does not pick up after their pet. Just imagine a mound of waste from a dog near your campsite or on the road where you enjoy walking. Just because someone walks their dog at night is no excuse either. Take a flashlight, paper towels and baggie.

Homemade Curb Feelers

Monday, 6 April 2009 00:09 by admin

Heres another cheap way to stop scraping the curb on an RV. Now if you have never pulled too close and scraped a curb or any cement object, great! But if once or twice, you edged too close and scraped a curb, heres a cheap way to beat it. The newer vehicles all have fancy new rubber type antennas, but most junkyards all have the older vehicles with old stainless antennas with small springs on the bottom. You can usually get 2 of these for $5.00 at a local junk yard, and mount one in the front and one in the rear, on an angle so they would work just like the metal "curb warning rods" of years ago. Local junk yard's vehicles with the old style antennas work great and they are cheap. Because they are thin and small, you don't really see them so they don't make the RV look ugly. If you pull too close to an object like a curb, you'll hear the metal sound before you ever scrape your tires. Also, when you attach the antenna rods down on the lower part of your RV to act as warnings when you get too close to a curb, if you find the rod is too long, you can cut it shorter with a wire cutter. It really saves tires from getting cut up. One time these "feelers" save you from gouging your tire on a unexpected curb, and you'll be glad you took the time to put these on your rig.

Bike Racks

Sunday, 5 April 2009 23:54 by admin

If you are looking to carry some bicycles with your rig, a typical bike rack that fits the receiver hitch are very simple to use and cheap enough less than $100 at Wal-Mart. To keep them from rubbing or banging up against one another you should try figure a way to put a little cushion between the points on the bikes. An old piece of inner tube or something, pinched between the bike frames and held with shock cord should do the trick. Another option is to buy a rack holds three bikes and just place two of them so they won't rub against each other. Remember that most hitches can also be leveled out: just remove a pin so you don't have to raise and lower the bikes nor struggle with them to put them on the rack.
